WHAT IS ‘BYZANFEST’?

An international film festival strictly dedicated to Eastern Orthodox Christian filmmakers. Established in 2013, Byzanfest promotes Orthodox cinema to a global audience and strives to instill Orthodox phronema into the creative process.

Byzanfest streams on-demand and hosts physical screenings during “Screening Week”, which will run this year from Saturday 30th Oct – Monday 8 th Nov (AEST).

THE UNLOST HOMELAND
Follows the story of 12 Greeks from Constantinople who lived through the Istanbul pogrom of 1955 in Turkey.
 
It is notorious in modern history as the only pogrom of such magnitude to have taken place during peacetime. The camera lens together with the presenter transport us to the stories of all the refugees who were forced to leave their country as well as of one Turk who is in self-exile. These are the stories of everyday people who were brutally uprooted.

A QUIET NOOK OF CHRIST'S
A feature-doco about St. Mardarie Libertville, the first Serbian bishop on the soil of America and his way from his native Kornati near Podgorica, from where he started as a boy, to far Libertville. The film was shot on the occasion of the presentation of his holy relics after 82 years of his retirement.

STAMATIS ON SENSITIVITY
In an attempt to transfer his views and exploration toward a new iconography to younger artists, the famous Greek iconographer Fr. Stamatis Skliris wrote an article about sensitivity (a letter to an unknown student). The film is based on that letter to an anonymous student in which the artist expresses his views on art, humanity, God, color, shape, life, etc. It is a tribute to art of Stamatis Skliris, his spirituality, and the beauty of his painting. “Seek sensitivity everywhere so that you may stumble upon it both in life and in nature... Only when you paint that which you love can you deliver something true.”
